Follow these chick management tips to keep your chicks healthy and growing.

Tips to keep them healthy

  • Dip young chick’s beak in water upon arrival
  • Offer free choice grit #1 to aid in digestion
  • Supply 20-22 hours of light for the first 10 days
  • Begin with heat at 95 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Decrease temperature 5 degrees per week until reaching 70 degrees
  • Keep their litter dry and clean
  • Sanitize equipment frequently for chicks during the first few weeks to aid in disease control

Tips to get them growing

  • Keep segregated from laying flock
  • Limit light to 12 hours if possible

  • If using nipple waterers for growing chicks, locate them so chicks can reach them without having to look straight up

Tips for space, water and feeder areas

  • Space requirement for chicks: 0.9 sq ft./bird
  • Water requirement: one 1 gallon water fountain per 50 birds
  • Feeder area requirements are as follows:
    • Hatch to 3 weeks: 1 inch/bird
    • 3-6 weeks: 2 inches/bird
    • Over 6 weeks: 3 inches/bird
